Book Snobbery

The one thing I can't stand is book snobbery!  People who think that because they read the book they're a better fan, or because they have read classics, like Shakespeare, they're a superior reader.  Now, I'm reading classics, because some of them I really love, but the writing style is a lot to read and sometimes hard to understand.   Sometimes I read them because I feel obligated to read the classics outside of a school lesson plan, but only a handful I enjoy.  Screen adaptations often make it easier to get the basics of the plot and make it easier to understand.  In the 19th century (1800s), the writers were paid by the word so they wrote a lot of descriptions and now it's just too much to read.

Also just because George RR Martin's series has vulgar language and sex doesn't mean Tolkien's work is superior to Martin's.  It just means Martin is blunt and not as poetic as Tolkien, and plot is NOT just the vulgar language and the sex.  It's political intrigue and people surviving this world.   We all have different tastes in books.  They do have one thing in common and that's how both authors created their only worlds, cultures, and peoples.
