Top Five: Best Books of 2018 so Far......

Best Books I Read So Far in 2018
1.      The Secret History by Donna Tartt.  The plot is intriguing.  The author takes a look how a person would handle an immoral situation.  The writing is enriching and beautiful.  Rich, arrogant, snobby, and pretentious people fascinate.
2.     Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend.  This is such a fun, whimsical read about a girl who gets a chance to be someone special, despite being considered a curse child.  I adored Morrigan as a protagonist, love the world Townsend created, the characters were great, and the concept of the trials was awesome.
3.     The Traitor’s Wife by Alison Pataki is a fictionalized version of a true story about Benedict Arnold’s second Peggy Shippen, who manipulated him into betraying America.  This is told through the voice and eyes of a fictional character, who is a maid to, and becomes a confidant to Peggy.  I enjoyed the writing and Peggy was a person you just love to hate, but it helps that this book explains her motivations.  She was so clever and got away with it, because most the men saw her as a naïve innocent young woman. The author choosing to tell this story through the eyes of a fiction character that has direct contact with our villain.  The author can take liberties using a fictional person, and the character is unbiased but sees a lot and is taken for granted, so she can get away with things.
4.     Home: A Memoir of my Early Years by Julie Andrews is about the beginnings of Mrs. Andrew’s career and we learn a little bit about her personal life.  She’s very open and funny.  As a fan, I enjoyed reading about this amazing woman.

5.     Heartless by Marissa Meyer.  Another whimsical story about the origins of the Queen of Hearts.  It still has a similar feel to Carrol’s books, but the writing isn’t as bizarre.  It still has the quirkiness of Wonderland.  The origins of the Queen of Hearts was perfect and  made since how it happened.  You actually root for her in the beginning of the story and feel sympathy for her.
