Brief Review of the new Doctor Who

Since it was around Christmas time when family was visiting us I was unable to watch the newest episodes of these two shows Doctor Who and The Librarians, but I finally watched both today on onDemand.  Here is my review of The Doctor Who Christmas Special.      Doctor Who takes a look at the superhero storyline in science fiction, and puts a spin on it.  The story takes place after the 24 years he was on Delirium with River, just thinking about it makes me sad, and goes back and forth between the other protagonists childhood and his present life.  The Doctor meets a little boy, Grant,  the other protagonist, who likes comics, while saving Earth, and the boy accidentally swallows this stone of the Doctor's that gives him super powers.  As an adult, Grant becomes a superhero, but on the side he is a Nanny for a woman, whom  he went to school with and had a crush on. She had a baby with his college roommate, but Grant's roommate abandoned's her and the baby, so Grant volunte

Top 5 Wednesday: Characters You'd Invite to a New Year's Eve Party

Top 5 Wednesday: Characters I’d invite to NYE Party Magnus Bane.  Magnus Bane is an exceptionally fun warlock who knows how to have a good time.  He could use his magical skills to entertain the guests and he has an infectious personality that could over anyone, unless you’re a Scoorge. Celaena Sardothian.  She loves to have a good time and go to parties.  She would also be an exciting person to converse with being well read, an assassin, and Fae.  Of course, I don’t know how she would feel about me and my friends. I know she doesn’t trust easily.  I’m going with only knowledge from the first books, but I have heard she isn’t as likable in the most recent books as a character. The Weasley Twins.  Just like Magnus they are magical and would be able to keep the guests entertain with jokes and pranks. Alice Cullen.  She knows how to throw a party.  She’ll be able to help me prepare before the guests arrived, and I would love to just hang out with her.  She’s really the only characte

School for Good & Evil Review of So Far

I am normally not a reader of middle grade level books, because of the writing style, but this one is really good.  It tells the story of two friends, Sophie and Agatha, who live in a village where the children are kidnapped, sent to a school for Good and Evil training, and then are placed into fairytales to live out the rest of their lives as these characters.  Sophie is pretty, blonde, charitable as long as it shows she's good, and vain. Agatha is plain. wears black, prefers isolation, and only has Sophie as a friend.  Sophie believes she'll go to the Good school for princess training and finding her prince, and tells Agatha she'll go to the Evil school, because she's different and a witch.  When they're taken they end up in the opposite schools, even the students and teachers are surprised, and both try to get back to the schools they believe they belong in.  Unfortunately, the girls, not meaning to, to continue to prove why they belong in the schools they were

Top 5 Wednesday: Fictional Gifts You'd Like to Give as Gifts

Here's my Top 5 Wednesday:  A Tardis.  I would give this my friend Terri, so she can go back in to ancient Egypt or possibly my friends Carol, who is a big Whovian, and I think she would enjoy the a trip with the Doctor on his Tardis.  My friend Kristen Weeks would probably enjoy traveling on the Tardis as well. A wand. I think I could give almost anyone a wand and they would enjoy it.  My mom could probably use it to help her clean and my dad to help with all his projects. A direwolf.  I don't know who I would give this....I think...Ter'race.  Her Baby passed away and I think she would love a new dog, granted its a wolf, but they're so cute and loyal.  She might have to move to a colder climate, so they're not the most practical gift, but I'm not one for practicality. Stele.  Laurissa hasn't gotten into Cassie Clare's books, but I think this would be very helpful to her.  She can have cool tattoo like marks on her skin that offer her great skills,

Rant!

I used to love Once Upon a Time and got even more excited when I watched Robert Carlyle's performance as Rumplestiltskin.  That first moment of RC's performance just gave him chills.   I intrigue by the plot, because who doesn't love fantasy and fairytales?!  Well, maybe some don't, but even my mom been interested as I watched every week.  Season one was great.  It was off to an amazing start, not perfect, but great.  That should have been the first sign.     The premise for the first season was great, but the writer's made a risky choice by having Emma Swan, the savior break the curse by the end of the season.   At the time, I was curious to see what they would do next, where would they go from there, and if the second season would have been better.  It wasn't better, at least not to me, but it was decent.  After all, a lot of shows have Sophomore Season Slumps, but season two was when it all started to go bad.   The over-used amnesic plot that's consta

Top 5 Wednesday: Series/Season That Got Worse

Image
It's top 5 Wednesday time!  I know it's a day early but I won't be able to get on all day tomorrow. This is a goodreads group created by Ginger Reads Lainey and now hosted by Sam on Thoughts on Tomes.  Here are my books series/T.V. Series that got worse.  This is just my opinion. Twilight series.  I have mixed feelings about this series. I have a soft spot for it, but I do agree it started to not be as good, though, I did like the different vampire types that were introduced in Breaking Dawn.   House of Night series.  The protagonist Zoey Redbird was really annoying me as the series progress, and there were too many books, I was getting bored.  They could have stopped the antagonist a lot sooner. I had to DNF the series.    Glee.  It got repetitive and the new cast storyline felt like a repeat of the original storyline.  I only like the singing.   Once Upon a Time.  There is so much I could say about this show and how bad the writing got.  The writers seeme

Top 5 Wednesday: 2017 Reads

Image
The top 5 books I want to finally read in 2017 are..... Out of Oz by Gregory MaGuire.  I want to reread the other 3 books, so if they have them in the library I'll just borrow them, until I get a job.  I loved that series and still have not read the last book.   Inheritance by Christopher Paolini.  I'll have to do the same thing with this series and reread the first three books, which I still have, and it will give me a chance to determine if the movie truly was bad.   The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo.  Ever since I heard Samantha from Thoughts on Tome talk about this I've been obsessing over reading this trilogy.  This might be a library book, but I will probably end up buying him.

Tome Topple & Update

Image
Tome Topple ended last night at 11:59 PM.  At the time of tome topple we were transitioning into in our new house, and I was only able to read to the tome that I had, which was Dragonfly in Amber.  I had been hoping to read Game of Thrones, but it was among the books that were still in storage.  In Dragonfly in Amber I got as far as page 632.  I'm so excited that I am able to get this far in a book that is over 500 pages, and not a YA.  I think there are some YA books that I have read and finished that are over  500 pages. 1Q84 # of Pages: 897 ElfQuest # of Pages: 242 I started a tome TBR inspired by the tome topple readathon. Tome TBR ·          Voyager (by Diana Gabaldon) ·          The Name of the Wind (by Patrick Rothfuss) ·          Game of Thrones(Reread) (G.R.R. Martin) I will be adding more to this list.  The Name of the Wind is a book I am asking for Christmas so hopefully I will receive it. I got my new mattress and was able to place my bedding on i

Top Five Wednesday: Villains

T5W: Favorite Villain Queen Levana from The Lunar Chronicles.  She is so manipulative and deliciously evil.   She is also insane.  My favorite kinds of villains are unstable in the mind. Pennywise from "IT"  He's a clown that represents people's fears, enough said.  What is more scary than something that isn't tangible and can read your mind?  That is why he is on this list because he is absolutely terrifying. Cersei Lannister from Song of Ice and Fire.  Cersei is just like Levana, and I bet Cersei would love to have Levana's power to mess with people's minds.   Smaug from  The Hobbit.  He's so sly and charming.  Also I love dragons. Jack Randall from Outlander.  He's so disgusting, perverted, and could be a real person making him even more scary.  This makes him the perfect villain.

Creating my Room: New Desk

This was an old vanity we got from my grandmother that my dad fixed up so I could use it as a desk.  I had expressed wanting a desk that looked old fashioned, so he also made it look distilled for me and turned some pipes into desk legs.

Top 5 Wednesday: Rereads

I'm going to go ahead and share my top five Wednesday. This Wednesday's topic is top five books I want to reread.  This is actually a pretty easy one for me, because one of my biggest readers problem is buying more books than I can reread.  Here's my list and these are in no particular order. #T5W Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell.  This is one of my favorite romances and I love the character of Scarlet, even if she can be selfish bitch. She's such a complex character that grows so much in the story. Plus, I have a soft spot for historical romances. It by Stephen King.  I was afraid of clowns long before I read this book, but its one of the best horror stories that I had ever read.  I've been wanting to reread this book for a long time, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.  I have watched the movie multiple times, but the movie doesn't have as much as the book does. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. I have to admit this is the only book from this s

Tips on Reading Classics

I have so much trouble reading and processing classics, because of how dense they are and how they are written.  I was searching on Youtube/Booktube and I came across this video.  If you have the same problem check out the video, because it gives great tips. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Agl6OzlFa9Y

#TomeTopple

I am participating in #tometopple which is a readathon that lasts two weeks and is basically reading books that are over 500 pages.  It starts November 18th and ends December 1st @ 11:59  PM.  I don't even have to finish the book(s) its just challenging yourself and having fun reading much longer books.  There are challenges, but I'm not going to worry about those, though I am meeting at least one of the challenges with reading two books from series.  I'm kind of cheating with one of them, because I started that one last month.  Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon, the second book in The Outlander series.  My other pick is Game of Thrones by G.R.R. Martin, because I had been wanting to reread the first 2 books, and hopefully absorb it  better.  This is found on Goodreads, so if you are interested sign up for Goodreads and join the group. https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/201929-tome-topple-readathon

Characters I Used to Love, but Don't Anymore

Hey everyone,   This is my first Top 5 Wednesday.  T5W is something on Goodreads, group where you make a list of 5 things book related that's based on a topic given.  I hope I gave a good explanation. This weeks topic is top 5 characters you used to love, but no longer love them, hence the title.  Disclaimer, these are just my opinions. I don't hate any of these characters, just no longer like them as much. 1. Edward Cullen from Twilight.  When I read Twilight as a teenager I was team Edward all the way, and Jacob just seemed too immature to me. I was also a huge vampire fan.  I have since lost interest in vampire plots, because to me they are so boring. That has partly helped me look more critically at Twilight and Edward. I am beginning to see Edward was too controlling and a bit stalkerish, plus no one should be that dependent on guy.  Bella's dependency isn't Edward's fault, but it doesn't make me like him.  2. Jace from Mortal Instruments.  Just like Edward

Beginnings of Sarah J. Maas Collection

Image
Here is my copy of the first two books in Throne of Glass; Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight.  I hope to get the third one, Heir of Fire for Christmas.  I'm loving the series so far.  Team Chaol!!!  But I like Dorian too, just not as Celaena's lover, but her good friend. I got both of these from BooksaMillion. Add caption I got this one at Barnes & Noble, but I will wait to finish it before I buy or ask for Court of Mist and Fury.  I'm hoping by then it will be in paperback, which I prefer since I take books with me wherever I go.

My Reading Life as of Right Now

--I just finished Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight, and I have been thinking about reading them again before I get  Heir of Fire.  Its on my Christmas list. --I joined Goodreads!!! --Currently reading Dragonfly in Amber the second book in the Outlander series.  That book is so long, and will probably take me a few months, unless I take a break like I usually do when I read books that length. --I'm so frustrated, because there are so many series I want to check out, but I'll have to part with some of my books that I currently have.  I have a few I am willing to part with, but my mom wants me to purge, plus I have limited shelf space.

My Recent Fangirl Exploits

I finally started reading Throne of Glass series!  The first book was great and Celeana is a character I can relate to with the exception of the being an assassin.  I doubt I could bring myself to do that, let alone handle weapons.  I'm very uncoordinated and would hurt myself.  What I do relate to is her love of reading and her temper.  I can get hot headed.  In case you don't know, the first book is the story of Celeana Sardothian, an assassin who gets recruited by the tyrant king's son, Dorian, as his champion in competition to be his father's assassin.  The competition turns brutal when the other competitors start getting mutilated and killed by a monstrous creature.  The ghost of the first queen of Erilea insists Celeana stop the monster and win the competition.  Its a fun thrilling adventure with intriguing, relatable characters, and its a quick read.    I'm also still obsessing over Galavant, but fall show season has started, so my focus has returned to t

Galavant

I just finished watching the two seasons of Galavant from ABC Studios.  It was a cute, funny, exciting, sweet, adventurous story.  It tells the story of a noble knight by the name of Galavant, and who got rejected by his long time lady love, Magdalena, who chooses the rich King Richard, over Galavant.   Galavant is given a chance to win Magdalena back from Richard by helping Princess Isabella save her kingdom from Richard and Magdalena who invaded it.  Galavant, Isabella, and Galavant's squire, Sid, go on a quest, but it is revealed that Isabella is also doing this because Richard has threatened to kill her parents if she doesn't bring Galavant back to Valencia, her kingdom.  Along the way Isabella starts to fall in love with Galavant and Galavant learns he's a bit of an arrogant jerk that needs to be more humble.    Meanwhile Magdalena has realized Richard isn't as appealing as she thought and tries to ignore him.  Richard tries everything he can to win her over with

Lunar Chronicles Adaptation

I think The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer would make a great television series for a channel like Freeform or SyFy channel.  In case you don't know, its a four book series, with a prequel called Fairest, that's a futuristic retelling of the fairytales: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White.  There were two more world wars that lead to the world be divided into four different governments for all the Asian countries, European ones, United Kingdom,  and America, while some live on the moon.  The ones that live on moon have special powers where they can mind control, but not all Lunars can do it.  Those are called Shells.   The first book centers around Cinder a gifted mechanic living with her step family.  Prince Kai asks her secretly to fix his cyborg, because it has information about Luna's lost princess Selena, and Kai doesn't want to have to marry Luna's current tyrannical Queen Levenna.  Kai and Cinder also both want to stop a disea

Why I Love Kate Morton

I am doing two blogs tonight, because I want to post one that is a little more positive then the other one.  As you can tell by the title, this blog is going to be about one of my favorite authors, Kate Morton.   This one will be shorter than the other blogs.    Mrs. Morton is the author of The Secret Keeper, The House at Riverton (The Shifting Fog), The Forgotten Garden, The Distant Hours, and The Lake House, which is my current read.  All her books have a little bit of mystery from the past to solve, not like Sherlock Holmes style, but something tragic happened in the past and in the present, a character has to figure it out to help herself and heal the past.  They're also usually historical reads and I just love history, not that I will read a textbook for fun, but learning about the past through a person's story is always an exciting thing to explore.     Mrs. Morton's style and pros are so beautiful and fluid, and easy to read.  You have no problem picturing the s

Bookish Pet Peeves

Amnesia Plotlines--They are overdone and the easy way out of a plot problem.   If its a reset for a villain to be a good person or if its too protect a character, then that might be an exception.  Also if its about restoring someone's memory then its okay to me, though I still will not watch The Vow, because the family taking advantage of the woman having no memory upset me. Love Triangles--I won't not read a book/series if it has a love triangle, but they are so annoying and its a cliché, just like amnesia plot devices.  Its usually a girl being like "Oh, which attractive boy or man do I really want?  This is such a challenge.  OMG!"  Honey, do you know how lucky you are? Dog Earring--I use to do this, I admit, but now it just irritates me, and every time I see a page folded over I have to fix it, or try to fix it.  Of course, at the same time I try not to weird people out, so I won't do that to random people's books if I see them reading.  I also agree th

A Sad Realization

I love Harry Potter, I enjoyed Twilight, and Mortal Instruments as well as its spin-off Infernal Devices were awesome.  Unfortunately, once you grow as a reader and join the fandom world, the sad reality hits you:  these series have flaws and people love to criticize them.  I know most would find this stupid and silly for me to feel frustrated by, but the fact is I have very opinionated friends and I am a very insecure person, who does have a problem with letting others influence me.     When someone thoroughly and strongly shares their opinions I question my own opinions.  Yes, I know ignore them and don't let others influence me, but shockingly enough, its not easy for me to do so on a social network.  Social networks aren't just for socializing there also a place where you can share without coming face to face with anyone.  It's a place where your opinion is there for all to see and you can drill it in people's heads without the fear of them walking away. Maybe I&

Moving

This isn't about being a fangirl, but this is about what is going on in my personal life.  My parents and I (I have disabilities that make it a necessity for me to live with  my parents and not on my own.) are trying to mom to North Carolina, but two of our buyers had to back out at the last minute do to unforeseen circumstances.  I don't want to be disappointed for a third time, but I don't want to get my hopes either, because if we are disappointed again I don't know if I can handle it.  I have been waiting for this move ever since my parents said it was to going to happen.  I hate where I live and I have lived here my whole life.  I a need change. I need to be in an environment that's medium paced but still walkable, and I need to live in a state where people are nice to each other.  Also where we are moving the weather is perfect!  It still can get cold, but its mostly warm and hot.  I can't stand being cold and I concentrate even less, because I'm tryin

Patience is a Virtue I seem to Lack

How do you handle not taking on those who will end up causing you more stress than you need?  I  keep offering to help those who seem more sensitive than others, that have these issues, and then I end up regretting it because I can't handle it.  I have my own problems, which leads to what I think is the reason I help these people.  I can relate to them to some extent and I want to protect them.  I've been learning, though, that sometimes you gotta stand on your own two feet.  I like to think, personally, I'm doing that slowly, but I still have my problems.    This one girl (I say girl, even though she's a woman, because she acts like a girl.   She's a year or two older than me and I got the impression that she was younger!) drives me crazy and I'm trying to be patient, but its a struggle.  The best I am able to do is to ignore her, but if she ever say "I thought you had my back"  I might just suggest she unfriend me.  To be honest, it wouldn't

An Apprentice in Magic: Chapter Four

Chapter Four:             Rumple wrapped his cloak tightly around him trying to stifle the chill that surrounded him as he stood in the middle of this dank crypt, a place he didn’t understand his brother, Rasputin, found so comfortable.   Then again, Ras was always the more cold-blooded one out of the three of them.               “Ah, Rumple, my dear little brother,” Rasputin said enthusiastically, as he emerged from the shadows.   The sleeves of his robes dangled like shrouds off his arms as he approached his baby brother.   “I’m glad you have come to grace me your presence.”             “You summoned me Ras, I wasn’t going to turn down my older brother’s request to see me,” Rumple replied curtly.   “What is it you want?”             “Ah, well business first,” Rasputin stated, “Rothbart, is really the one who wishes to see you.”             “Really, why is that dearie?” Rumple questioned.             “Maybe he wants a family reunion,” Rasputin replied, shrugging
